Career Advisor Tips for a Great Resume

  • Do your best to quantify your results.  Did you make the company money?  Did you save the company money?  Did you reduce processing time?  For example: “Reduced processing time from 5 days to 3 days, resulting in a savings of $20K.”
  • Make sure your contact information is listed at the top of the page.  This should include a working phone number, email address, and mailing address.  There should be no unprofessional text in your email address. Secure a new email for this purpose if needed.
  • These days most resumes are scanned to see if certain "buzz" words come up that are required for the position. Make sure you have read the job description thoroughly and have matched your skills to the job for which you are applying.
  • Your most recent job experience should be listed at the top followed by older assignments.  Education should be listed at the bottom.
  • The “personal interests and hobbies” section should not be overlooked.  Often this is the first section potential employers look at as it is the most interesting.  They are also looking to see if you would be a good “fit” at the organization.
  • Your resume should fully fit on one page and should be printer-friendly.
